What does the future hold? As a child, I loved movies like Back to the Future, which projected what the future might look like. They always had some form of hoverboard and robotic-looking styles. I enjoyed telling stories of new inventions and discoveries — imagining how the world would be in my adulthood. Perhaps it was foreshadowing for my career as a design strategist and futurist.

As an adult, I’m still excited about the future, but now I see different perspectives for each technological advancement, perspectives that I didn’t see as a kid. Instead of imagining the future through stories alone, I envision multiple possible futures using unique methods and use insights to form strategies for my small business clients. Businesses and organizations today use strategic foresight to make better decisions. Foresight and long-term planning are critical for survival in the business world, and as a society, it is important that we use strategic foresight to create a better world for all of us and for future generations.

Melissa and I looked at trends of today and were able to find some themes headed in different directions. Instead of saying “well, it could go one way or it could go the other”, we imagined both. Here’s why.
