The Power and Responsibility of Designers: Shaping a Better Tomorrow
I had the honour of speaking at the FITC (Future. Innovation. Technology. Creativity.) Spotlight UX conference. I shared the stage with Jared Spool (!!!!), Stephanie Speranza, David Hogue, Laura Schaefer, Sarah Hunt, Camilo Jones, Patrick Neeman, Joshua Mauldin, and Beth Anne Kinnaird.
I kept it small and insignificant— talking about the immense power and responsibility that designers possess, especially in the dynamic realm of technology.
I started by describing the way the Internet helped me on my journey into queerness. I had to start on a positive note before diving into the ways designers can unwittingly cause harm by neglecting the implications of their work. Throughout the talk, one resounding theme emerged; the need for designers to think critically, consider the broader context and envision the long-term impacts of their solutions.

As I passionately emphasized during the session, we designers hold the keys to shaping society’s future. The things we create wield the power to revolutionize the very fabric of our existence.
